This was the first NZ Forest Service B49 two-person biv built in Westland and probably NZ. It was built in 1957 with the materials being flown in by fixed wing aircraft. Frew Saddle Biv has a corrugated iron roof, flatiron walls lined with tar paper and chicken wire and two very short sleeping platforms. It is part of the Frew Saddle - Toaroha Saddle circuit, a 4 to 5-day tramp of moderate difficulty and is also used as a stopover on crossings of Mathias Pass into Canterbury. A classic and simple shelter but I bet there are many epic tales to tell about this place.
