Perched on a windswept alpine basin above Dusky Sound, Lake Roe Hut sits among the misty tarns and tussock plateaus of Fiordland National Park. Originally built in the late 1960s as a basic shelter, it soon proved no match for the relentless Fiordland downpours. Over time, heavy snowfalls and rain caused the roof to sag and leak. A maintenance trip, organised by the Backcountry Trust, was repeatedly delayed by weather and logistical challenges. By the time the team finally made it in, the job had evolved from a simple re-roof into a full rebuild of the roof structure. They also removed the last of the lead nails and flashings to protect kea from accidental poisoning, a small but critical step in protecting the alpine ecosystem. Thanks to this dedicated effort, Lake Roe Hut is now ready to withstand the next half-century of winter storms, continuing its quiet service to trampers tackling the wild and beautiful Dusky Track.
