Cone Hut is the second oldest hut in the Tararua Forest Park & has historic designation. It is a great example of bush carpentry having been constructed with slabs of totara. The slabs were hewn from trees on site with adzes and axes.

DOC originally wanted to move the hut to a tramping museum to be set up at Otaki Forks. However, protest by the Tararua Tramping Club led to it remaining in place and it was instead restored.
