This piece looks south from Hahei, towards a stretch of coastline hidden from most by the pā at the end of the beach. On still days, when the ocean turns glassy and the wind falls away, its magic is revealed. You can glide over the ocean’s oily surface in a kayak, peer down into the clear depths and slip in and out of sea caves as if discovering a secret world. Then the swell returns, the wind lifts, and this quiet wonderland is concealed once more.
