“As we topped the first wave I was certain we could never make it in time over the second. Already I could see it curling over, the spray whipped off the lip. We veered right and paddled like Olympic athletes. The wave towered above us as we started our almost vertical paddle up its face. To the left I could see the top of the wave about to plummet back down to earth”
