Mid Waiohine Hut is a six-bunk backcountry hut located deep in the Tararua Ranges, originally built in 1962 by the New Zealand Forest Service as part of their deer-culling network. It’s one of the few huts in the Tararuas that still retains its original S70 design and classic orange colour, giving it historic character. Access is via a challenging tramping route from Mt Holdsworth, taking around 6–7 hours, or roughly 4 hours from Jumbo Hut. The hut sits beside the Waiohine River, surrounded by dense native bush, and offers nearby swimming spots, which make it a refreshing treat after a long hike. With its remote setting, original design, and riverside charm, Mid Waiohine Hut is a special spot for experienced trampers looking for a piece of Tararua history.
