Mataketake Hut was opened in 2021 to open up a tops circuit that included part of the Haast–Paringa Cattle Track in South Westland. The hut was designed by Red Gecko Architecture in Wanaka for the Andy Dennis Estate and built by a large group of builders from Wanaka, Christchurch and Castle Hill. DOC Hokitika builders helped with the Wanaka build team to complete the interior finishing. While the hut took a little longer to complete with the interruption of the Covid shutdown, this did arrive with the bonus that the Covid recovery dollars helped employ guides from the glaciers to work with DOC to recut the historic Mica Mine track that leads to the tops and open up the old forest service route down to Maori Saddle Hut.

The hut was funded from a bequest from the late writer, nature guide and conservationist Andy Dennis who spent many years campaigning for the conservation of New Zealand's wild places and marine environment. His trustees chose this South Westland site for it's inspiring view to the coast and in memory of the work Andy had put in to write the South-west World Heritage guidebook. A small library of Andy’s books was installed by his family, adding a personal touch that honours his lifelong dedication to New Zealand’s wild places. A lasting memorial to his love of the backcountry, literature and his commitment to sharing it with others. On its completion the hut was passed over to the Backcountry Trust to manage who along with DOC maintain the facilities in the area.
