Long Harry Hut is perched on the rugged northwest coast of Rakiura / Stewart Island. It is a remote 12-bunk shelter built in 2004 to replace an earlier hut nearby and now serves as a key stop on the island’s challenging North-West Circuit. The hut takes its name from “Long Harry” Woodman, a local figure believed to have lived in the area or nearby Codfish Island though stories differ on whether the "long" refers to his height or his lasting presence. His mysterious fate, along with sweeping sea views, occasional kiwi sightings, and the hut’s isolation, gives the place a quiet, rugged charm steeped in both natural beauty and local lore.
