Komata Hut is nestled in the Kaweka Forest Park in Hawke’s Bay. It was originally built in the early 1960s as “Comet Hut” for forestry workers and hunters but was located at a road end and suffered neglect and abuse. In 2022–24, an inspiring all-female volunteer team led by the Backcountry Trust, relocated and rebuilt the hut on a terrace 30m above the Ngaruroro River. The women participating in what became known as “The Wahine Job” flat packed the old Comet Hut, cut a track into the new site, felled the kanuka and scrub in the new hut location, dug holes for the piles by hand and build a foundation for the hut to be rebuilt upon. They flew in the flat packed hut and rebuilt it on site. It’s now providing shelter for trampers, hunters and rafters exploring the Kaweka Range and symbolises both the region’s rugged history and the power of community restoration.
