Puriri moths live as a grub in the bark of a puriri tree for up to six years then spend two days as a moth. In this painting the background pattern is made up of hexagons to represent the six years as a grub. In each set of six whichever way you look at it you’ll find two stylised moths to show the two days they spend in that form. In the other segments are leaves, berries and flowers from the puriri tree and the starry sky.
